SLU After Dark | Enjoy South Lake Union's New Interactive Art Installations Throughout December

The holiday season is upon us, and our days are getting shorter with each passing day. What better way to celebrate the season and combat the darkness than with innovative and festive art installations? That’s what you’ll find in South Lake Union this month with SLU After Dark, a collection of art displays that take lights to the next level.

South Lake Union has always been regarded as a hub for innovation and art. One of its unique offerings is the Vulcan Real Estate Public Artwalk that features 23 individual works of outdoor art throughout the neighborhood, all of which were designed to inspire connection and interaction. If you’ve been to the area, you’ve likely seen the array of commanding sculptures and distinctive art displays that make this neighborhood special.

Now, the community is bringing even more art to the area, in the hopes that people will gather together to see and interact with the art during this holiday season. In partnership with Creos, a leading agency for touring interactive installations whose mission is to transform public spaces into must-see destinations, South Lake Union has created four seasonal and interactive art installations that will remain available to the public for the entire month of December.

Passage

Shaped like a large, colorful tube, this installation was designed for people to walk through. As you do, the sensors on either side of you will light up so that each person interacting with the art sees a different pattern of light.

  • Located at Van Vorst Courtyard, 426 Terry Avenue N, Seattle, WA 98109

  • Created by Serge Maheu

  • Produced by MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE

Impulse

Just outside the Amazon Spheres, you’ll find Impulse, an art piece thoughtfully produced with the concept of nostalgia in mind. People are invited to play on one of the many seesaws in this display and are asked to bring themselves back to a period of their childhood, where all worries and troubles melt away. As each person seesaws, the lights on those structures illuminate.

  • Located at Day One Playfield, 2121 7th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121

  • Created by Lateral Office & CS Design

  • Produced by Quartier des Spectacles Partnership

Prismatica

The largest of all the installations, Prismatic features 25 similar units that command attention. Prism-shaped, they are translucent and multicolored, so you can see a variety of colored lights that change depending on where you are viewing them from. As with all the others, they are interactive and people are invited to spin them, causing light to reflect off various surfaces when doing so.

  • Located at Nitro Plaza, 2250 7th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98109

  • Created by RAW Design

  • Produced by Quartier des Spectacles Partnership

Oscillation

Shaped like large geometric figures, with each side of the structure a different, bright color, this installation is extra unique, as people can both see and hear the art. Each unit transforms into a musical instrument when triggered or activated by motion, so you can turn on music at the touch of your hand.

  • Located at re:Invent Plaza, 2121 8th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121

  • Created by The Urban Conga

Given all that Seattle has been through these last two years, we’re thrilled to see the community coming together to create something beautiful, interactive, and festive. SLU After Dark will be in place until December 31st. We hope you’ll enjoy this bright art offering as much as we do.
